This six-day workshop includes seven nights at a homestay or hotel room. You also have the option of finding your own lodging. You would arrive on Saturday, August 10th, and depart on Saturday August 17th. As always, if you need to arrive a day early or stay a day later, we can make accommodations. The following activities are included in the cost of the training:

  • Welcome Session – We share and listen to how, as advocates, we view self-care and what strategies we use in our own lives to stay happy, healthy, and connected.

  • Self-Care Workshop – Using ancestral practices, our speaker will provide us with ideas on how we can better take care of our physical and emotional health.

  • Taller de Barro – We will be spending the day with mud. First, we will create clay we can use to sculpt from the soil. Then our teacher will show us various techniques on how to create beautiful and usable pieces that we will then fire in the afternoon and take with us. No experience with clay necessary.

  • Diálogos con el Bosque – We will be most of the day in the woods, on a non-strenuous walk, sitting, reflecting, listening, eating, and doing various activities that connect us to ourselves, each other, and to the bosque.

  • Medicina Traditional – Our speaker will help us understand the value and power of the relationships we human beings have with nature and the importance of opening our heart and minds to its many healing elements: plants, trees, flowers, water, birds, etc.

  • Temazcal Experience – We will attend a traditional sweat lodge in the afternoon to promote deep relaxation and reflection that allows a movement of energy through our bodies, clearing our minds and rejuvenating the spirit. This will be a gentle temazcal with the option to leave at any time. We will share a light dinner together after.

  • Taller de Cocina – This all-day workshop will start in a local market where we will buy the ingredients we will use for the day. We will then be invited into the home of our cook who will guide us through the entire preparation of a traditional oaxaqueño meal.

  • On three of the program days, comida (lunch) is included with the cost of attending as we will be on an excursion and sharing the meal together.

  • Some of the experiences in this training include ancient indigenous practices. Some people’s religious beliefs prevent them from participating in such practices. If your religious values may prevent you from participating in these cultural activities, this training may not be the best fit.

International Training for the Effective Immigration Advocate

We are happy to announce our eighth immigration advocate training in partnership with the non-profit MANOS: Migrantes Apoyados, No Olvidados. This training is a two-week program in Oaxaca, Mexico, with an emphasis on enhancing intercultural awareness through learning opportunities with community leaders, human rights defenders, lawyers, and language teachers. We have found that through this dynamic combination of seminars and visits to local communities, U.S.-based advocates who work for and with immigrant communities learn how to better support, assist, and learn from the people they serve who come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. All profits from this training go to support the work of MANOS to offer free legal services to Oaxacan migrants, to families of “disappeared” migrants, and to refugees. Please apply at: https://ollinoaxaca.org.mx/training
